MUSICAL OPENING
Base Africa MARIAM LAMINE BREANT SINGS AFRICA
Originally from Ivory Coast, but residing in the state of Maryland in the United States, "Shakama", as she is known, cannot help but think about what is happening on in her country: the social injustice, autocracy and bad leadership. This pain which could be widely generalized is shelled through her music that she came to share with us in Senegal.
Armed with her first album Farra fin musso (Black woman, African woman), Shakama stresses the fact that, in this album, she intends to honor mothers and women of the continent: those ladies who "inspired her a lot through their courage and their determination to go forward". And in this album released in CD and cassette, the situation is Ivory Coast seems to be a major concern. "It is the social injustice and the violation of the Constitution which denies the ivorian essence of my people that force me to express myself through music". There is no doubt that she is on the other side of the fence, compared to the others living in Abidjan, who have practiced the policy of exclusion.
With a word beat music style, in which the predominant sounds are reggae and rap, this production is mostly engaging. The songs Faso ("My father's land"), Assailant and Djanfaya (traitress) say a lot. This album of nine songs, sung in Bambara, French and English calls upon young Africans to stand up for their rights and not stand for political parties.
