3 questions to...

During her trip to promote her first cassette, Mariam Lamine Soumahoro AKA Shakama, has agreed to discuss her carrier, the situation in her country and her ambitions with us.

Shakama (artist and singer living in the USA)

"There is too much social injustice in Ivory Coast"

After spending eighteen years in the United States, here you are, back to your country, why?

I am here to promote my album which was released few days ago at Showbiz. In this album I sang reggae which is an engaging music. I am talking about social injustice.

Don't you feel apprehensive coming into the ivorian music world knowing that there is a multitude of music that already have hold of the market?

Ivorians are not afraid of anything. That's our strength. All the zouglou artists inspire me. I am a protégé of Aicha Koné.

Let's go back a bit. What brought you to music?

First, it was by passion. The five years long crisis in my country has also pushed me to express my thoughts. There are no jobs. It is a disaster.

In this country Ivory Coast, there is what I call social injustice and this is due to the war. I was afraid coming, but I realized that people long for peace and reconciliation despite their frustration.
